A Little Bit About Us
How It All Got Started
Seagull Scientific was founded in 1985, originally as a manufacturer and
distributor of bar code reading equipment for IBM and compatible personal
computers. We began selling our first label printing software, "The Bar Tender
for DOS," in 1987. Originally marketed as a companion product to our hardware,
it was clear by the early 1990s that our biggest opportunity for growth was
actually in software. Accordingly, we transitioned over more and more of our
development resources and, before we knew it, we were a thriving software
company!
The Key Turning Point
Things really began to take off in 1994, about a year after we launched the
Windows version of BarTender – the world’s first Windows application for
industrial label printers. Also in 1994, we engineered the first “true” Windows
drivers for the industry’s major brands of label printers. Our achievements did
not go unnoticed. Seagull began autumn of 1994 with 6 employees. By the end of
1996, we had more than 25 employees and had firmly established ourselves as an
industry leader in Windows-based label software.
BarTender has long been recognized around the world by users, resellers and
printer manufacturers for its speed, reliability, flexibility and ease-of-use.
We are also the world's largest developers of true Windows drivers for thermal
printers. (A number of the most successful manufacturers of industrial label
printers ship our Windows drivers in the box with their printers.)
As of 2006, we employ approximately 60 people.
An International Success
To best take advantage of a growing international economy, our software is
translated into more than 20 languages. In 1999, we opened our first overseas
office, now located in Madrid, Spain. In 2003, we opened our first Asia office
(in Taiwan), followed by another one in Tokyo in 2005. We also have small
branch offices in Philadelphia (USA), Toronto, and the United Kingdom. Our
products are sold by over a thousand resellers in more than 85 countries.
Our Good Financial Health
We are very proud of our continued success, with steady growth quarter to
quarter for many years now. We have achieved our growth based on the
reinvestment of real profits from the sale of real products -- not cash
"infusions" from outside parties who don't understand our industry. (We have no
debt burdens because we have simply never borrowed money.) Throughout the
company's 21+ years, our good financial health has meant never once having to
"downsize."
Some Employment Philosophies
All of our full-time USA employees are eligible for our excellent company health
plan, a 401K with employer matching, and continuing education reimbursement.
Other USA benefits include vacation and sick time that are not "use it or lose
it." (If you don't use your vacation time, you can take it as extra pay
instead. Similarly, unused sick time can be converted into extra vacation time
or pay.)
Rewarding employees for their hard work and creativity is an important part of
our management ethic. This is more than just "the right thing" to do – it makes
our managers' lives easier when they can transfer additional tasks to capable
individuals ready for increased responsibilities. It also means better employee
retention (and therefore more time completing important work, instead of doing
interviews!).
